Brandenburg, Germany (2023-2025)
Trips to Berlin's neighboring federal state are frequent, as parents, parents-in-law and a grandfather live here. For excursions, hiking, going to the lake or bird watching, Berliners travel to the “Umland” (surrounding contry).
Soon after I started taking photographs, I discovered Brandenburg as a rich source for the stories I want to find and tell with my photos.
In the summer of 2023, I traveled to all 16 districts and independent cities in Brandenburg for my first photo project.
Since then, I have been magnetically drawn to Brandenburg's “social landscape”, laconic scenes on the outskirts of its small towns and villages and desolate non-places in the in-between of city and countryside. Traces and themes of structural change, depopulation, deindustrialization, traces of the GDR, emptiness and vastness as well as living environments beyond the inner-city milieus are reflected here.
This collection, which I see only as a snapshot of a continuous and longer-term project, comprises works created at various locations in Brandenburg between 2023 and 2025.
