Brandenburg, Germany (2023-2025)
My excursions to Brandenburg, Berlin's neighboring federal state, are frequent, as parents, parents-in-law and a grandfather live there. And Berliners like to travel to the “Umland” (surrounding country) for day trips, hiking or going to the lakes. Soon after I had adopted photography as my new pastime, I discovered Brandenburg as a rich source for the stories I want to find and tell with my photos.
In the summer of 2023, I traveled to all 18 counties and independent cities in Brandenburg for my first photo project. Since then, I have been magnetically drawn to Brandenburg's peculiar “social landscape”: Laconic scenes on the outskirts of its small towns and villages, mundane places in the edgelands, the in-between of city and countryside.
These places have been shaped by structural change, depopulation, deindustrialization, traces of the GDR and convey a feeling of void and vastness which I hope to articulate with my photos.
This collection, which I see only as a snapshot of a continuous and long-term project, comprises works created at various locations in Brandenburg between 2023 and 2025.
